The Gar is a dim sum restaurant located within Shahe Golf Club in Shenzhen. The project draws inspiration from the atmosphere of traditional English clubs, blending classical design references with a contemporary hospitality function.

The design intent was to create an environment that feels intimate and composed, but comfortable, suitable for private dining and entertaining. This was achieved through the use of rich materials—dark timber panelling, patterned textiles, leather and velvet upholstery—paired with tailored lighting and layered textures. Each element was selected to contribute to a quiet, immersive atmosphere that supports the dining experience without overwhelming it.

The spatial layout is composed of a series of defined rooms and semi-private zones, reflecting the formality and structure often found in classic club interiors. Custom-designed joinery and decorative features, including vintage-inspired light fixtures and golf-themed artworks, reinforce the connection to the site context and the club’s heritage.

Material choices throughout the restaurant respond to a desire for longevity and sensory richness. Marble, bronze, timber, and mohair fabrics were used for their tactile qualities and natural patina over time. A consistent palette of deep, warm tones was applied to maintain a sense of coherence across the different areas of the restaurant.

The result is a dining environment that is immersive, calm, and rooted in a specific cultural and spatial reference point, adapted for a contemporary audience in one of China’s fastest-growing cities.
